Spangle Transfer
A spangle transfer is a sheet of sequin-like reflective discs bonded to a heat-release film that presses onto fabric without leaving glue residue.
Spangle transfers arrange small aluminum or plastic discs — usually 5mm to 7mm across — face-down on a heat-release carrier film, each held only by a dab of low-melt adhesive on the film itself rather than glued straight to the garment. A heat press applies the whole sheet at 305-320°F for 10-15 seconds; the carrier's coating melts just enough to transfer each spangle onto the fabric, and the design is finished with a cold peel once the carrier film has fully cooled.
Because each spangle sits loose on its own axis, spirit-wear buyers get a shimmer that shifts as the wearer moves, closer to a sequin gown than a fixed rhinestone grid. Cheerleading and dance-team orders are the biggest market for these transfers — a spangle mascot on a warmup jacket reads as bright, moving glitter under gym lights instead of the flat sparkle of glued-down crystal, with no visible glue haze around the edges the way a poorly cured rhinestone job can leave.
Shops spec spangles over rhinestones when the order calls for lighter weight (a spangle runs a fraction of a stone's mass, which matters on youth sizes and thin jersey), lower cost per square inch, or a design meant to move rather than sit flush. Rhinestones still win on close-up sparkle and laundering durability; spangles are the better call for a one-season team order or a design meant to be seen from a distance.
Buyers often assume spangle and rhinestone sheets press the same way. Running a spangle transfer at rhinestone temperatures, often 20-30°F hotter, can over-melt the carrier and glue spangles down crooked or fuse them together. Peel timing matters more than expected too — pulling the film while it's still warm drags spangles out of alignment before the bond has set.
