Cold Peel

Cold peel means letting a pressed transfer cool to room temperature, roughly 60-90 seconds off the platen, before pulling the carrier film away from the fabric.

Cold-peel transfers are formulated so their adhesive stays soft and tacky right off the press and only fully sets as it cools, which means the PET film has to sit undisturbed until the shirt is cool enough to touch comfortably — usually 60 to 90 seconds, sometimes longer in a cold shop in winter. Some sublimation applications and certain plastisol and glitter HTV sheets use this chemistry because the slower set gives sharper edge definition on fine detail than a fast hot-peel formula can hold.

For a shop running a rack of orders, cold peel means building a cooling station into the workflow — a cork mat or wire rack where pressed pieces sit for a minute before anyone touches the film — rather than pulling straight off the platen and moving on. Skip that step and you'll drag half-set ink right off the shirt with the film, which is exactly what happened to a batch of glitter transfers we pressed too fast one Saturday rush and had to reprint from scratch.

Buyers who order DTF or HTV transfers to press themselves need to read the supplier's peel instruction before starting, because cold peel isn't optional patience — it's chemistry. Set a kitchen timer for the printed cooldown window instead of guessing by feel, since a shirt can look cool to the touch on the surface while the ink underneath is still soft.

The common mistake is confusing "cold peel" with "it's fine once it's not hot anymore." Pulling even ten seconds early on a true cold-peel sheet can lift ink in patches or leave a hazy, half-transferred film pattern that no amount of re-pressing fully fixes.
