RIP Software
RIP software is the program that converts finished artwork into a printer's actual ink instructions — color separations, the white underbase, halftones, and profile corrections.
RIP software — RIP stands for raster image processor — is the program sitting between a finished design file and the actual print head. It separates the artwork into ink channels, decides where and how dense the white underbase should print on a dark garment, applies halftone or dither patterns for gradients, and pulls in the ICC profile that corrects color for that specific printer-and-substrate combination. Shops running DTG or DTF lean on tools like Kornit's software stack, AccuRIP, or Cadlink, while sublimation shops commonly run Sawgrass's PowerDriver or an Ergosoft-based RIP.
A lot of what separates a clean print from a muddy one happens here, invisibly, before ink ever hits fabric. RIP software is what chokes the white underbase — shrinking it a fraction smaller than the color layer above it — so no white fringe rings the edges of a design, and it's what nests several small designs together onto one sublimation sheet or DTF roll to save media instead of running each one separately.
Pros keep their RIP presets dialed in per garment-and-ink combination and adjust underbase density or halftone frequency there, in the software, rather than trying to fix it by editing the source art file. That's also where gang-sheet nesting gets set up for DTF and sublimation runs, packing designs efficiently across a shared sheet.
When a print comes out muddy or shifted in color, buyers tend to blame the printer hardware. More often the actual cause is upstream in the RIP — a mismatched or missing ICC profile, the wrong halftone setting — or a low-resolution source file that never gave the software good data to work from in the first place.
