Color Separation

Color separation splits artwork into one film per ink color so each can be burned onto its own screen and printed in the correct order.

Before a design ever touches a screen, it has to be split apart — one film, one color, each color isolated into its own solid black-and-white layer. That's color separation: taking a piece of art and breaking it into the exact number of screens the press will burn and print, in the order they need to lay down (usually underbase first, darkest or most opaque colors next, details and highlights last).

For the buyer, this is invisible work that shows up as a line item on a quote when submitted artwork is more complex than it looks — a logo with a subtle gradient, a drop shadow, or anti-aliased edges from a low-res JPEG can take a separator real time to untangle into clean, printable layers. We've taken a 'simple two-color' file from a customer and found eleven distinct shades once we actually separated it, because it had never been built for print in the first place.

Clean vector artwork with flat, defined colors separates fast and cheap; photographic or gradient-heavy art needs halftone separations or simulated-process techniques to fake continuous tone using only a handful of solid inks, which takes more time and skill to get right. Shops that offer free basic separations usually cap that offer at a set number of colors before charging an art fee for anything more complex.

A common misconception is that separating art is just 'converting to CMYK' the way a home printer would. Screen-print color separation is almost always built as individual spot-color layers matched to specific inks, not a four-color-process breakdown, unless the job specifically calls for simulated process or four-color printing on press.
