Puff Additive (Puff Ink)
Puff additive is a plastisol ink additive that foams and rises during curing, producing a raised, 3D texture instead of a flat printed surface.
Puff additive is a chemical additive, usually a microencapsulated blowing agent, mixed into plastisol ink at ratios ranging from roughly 1:1 to 1:4 of additive to base that expands and foams when it hits cure temperature, typically 320-330°F, lifting the printed ink into a raised, cushioned texture instead of curing flat like standard plastisol.
This is the additive behind the thick, block-letter varsity look and the raised mascot logos that show up constantly on retro streetwear and letterman-style tees. We've found dwell time matters more than most shops expect here — pulling a puff print off the dryer belt even a few seconds early leaves it half-risen and soft, while overcuring flattens the foam back down before it fully sets, so getting a clean, tall puff takes real trial runs on the actual press, not just the ink supplier's chart numbers.
Pros keep puff designs bold and blocky rather than fine-detailed, since thin lines and small text don't carry enough ink deposit to rise evenly and tend to puff unevenly or not at all. Slower conveyor speed or a longer flash before final cure helps stubborn ink hit full puff height on thicker garments like hoodies that pull more heat away from the print.
Buyers often expect puff ink to hold its raised texture forever the way a flat plastisol print holds its color. Puff prints are more fragile under a hot iron or repeated tumble-dry-high cycles and can compress flat over the life of the garment, so care instructions should steer the wearer away from ironing directly on a puff design.
