High-Density Ink
High-density ink is a plastisol built up in thick, multi-pass layers to create a raised print with flat tops and sharp, defined edges.
High-density printing builds a raised print out of thick stencils, often 0.3 to 0.6mm of emulsion buildup, or a dedicated high-build stencil system, laid down in two to four passes with a flash between hits. Unlike puff ink, which domes and rounds as it heats, this ink keeps a flat top and a crisp vertical edge, sitting roughly 0.5 to 1mm proud of the fabric.
This is the thick, chunky, sharp-edged raised logo look buyers describe as "that print on the premium brand hoodies," and it's a different animal from puff even though both read as raised at a glance. It holds small text and fine linework far better, since the edge stays vertical instead of rounding off detail the way a puffed dome does.
Getting there takes real setup: precise registration across every pass (even a millimeter out of alignment shows at that thickness), specialized squeegees, and sometimes an underbase before the raised layers go down. Shops without a dedicated stencil-building process usually quote high-density ink as a premium add-on rather than a standard option.
Buyers regularly assume high-density ink and puff ink are the same effect. They aren't: puff rounds over and softens fine detail under heat, while this method stays flat-topped and sharp, holding small type that puff would blur into a blob.
