Jump stitch

A jump stitch is the connecting thread that travels across gaps between design elements before being trimmed, and excess jumps signal a poorly digitized embroidery file.

A jump stitch is the thread that travels across a gap between design elements — from the last stitch of one letter to the first stitch of the next — before the machine trims it. Most commercial machines are set to auto-trim any jump longer than about 1mm to 3mm, snipping it close to the fabric so it doesn't dangle on the finished piece.

A design with a lot of scattered small elements — a logo with separated letters, or an intricate line-art badge — naturally generates more jumps than a single solid block. That's not automatically a problem, but too many untrimmed or poorly placed jump stitches show up as loose thread tails on the back of the garment or, worse, stray threads caught under the next stitch and pulled visible on the front.

Good digitizing sequences a design to minimize travel between elements — sewing nearby shapes back to back rather than jumping across the whole logo and back — and sets trim points so the machine cuts cleanly instead of leaving long tails. We inspect the underside of a new sew-out specifically for jump stitches before approving a file for production.

The common mistake buyers make is assuming loose threads on a finished shirt are a sewing error at the machine. Most of the time it's a digitizing sequencing problem — the file told the machine to jump instead of trim — and it shows up the same way on every unit of that run until the file gets fixed.
