Embroidered patch
An embroidered patch is a stitched emblem applied by sewing or heat seal, a flexible alternative when direct embroidery won't work on a garment.
An embroidered patch is stitched separately from the garment it will end up on, usually on a twill, felt, or poly backing, then finished with a merrowed or laser-cut edge before it's applied by sewing, heat-seal adhesive, or hook-and-loop. Standard sizes run 2 to 4 inches across, and because the stitching happens flat on a dedicated patch run rather than hooped to the finished item, the same emblem can be produced once and applied to many different garments.
It's the fallback when direct embroidery isn't practical, heavy denim jackets, leather-look outerwear, or a customer-supplied garment a shop doesn't want to risk hooping and possibly damaging. Letterman jackets built around a chenille patch, tactical and outdoor jackets with hook-and-loop panels for swappable unit patches, and uniform programs that move the same emblem between seasonal jackets all rely on patches instead of stitching a fresh logo onto every piece.
Sew-on holds permanently and suits garments that get washed hard; heat-seal works fast on flat cotton or poly surfaces; hook-and-loop trades permanence for the ability to swap patches between garments. Because patches involve a separate production run before application, the economics favor bigger orders where the patch-making cost spreads across many units.
Buyers sometimes expect a patch program to cost the same as direct embroidery at any order size. Patches only get cheaper once volume is high enough to absorb the separate run and application labor, and a small one-off order is almost always less expensive stitched straight onto the garment instead.
