Embroidery digitizing

Embroidery digitizing is converting artwork into a machine-readable stitch file that tells an embroidery machine exactly where to sew every stitch.

Embroidery digitizing takes a logo — usually a vector file or high-res image — and rebuilds it stitch by stitch in specialized software, assigning stitch type (satin, fill, or running stitch), stitch direction, density, and underlay for every section of the design, then exporting it as a machine format like DST. A digitizer is deciding hundreds of small things a printer never has to: where one color block stops and the next starts, how thread will lay across a curve, and how much the fabric will pull as the needle punches through it thousands of times.

This is why an embroidery quote almost always includes a one-time digitizing fee on top of the per-shirt cost — that fee pays for the machine file, not the stitching itself, and a well-built file gets reused for every future order of that logo. We've re-digitized plenty of customer-supplied files that were done cheaply overseas; the stitch count looked fine on paper, but the underlay was missing and the finished logo puckered the fabric around every letter.

A skilled digitizer builds the file for the actual size it'll be stitched at — a 3-inch left-chest logo and a 10-inch jacket-back version of the same art need different setups, not just a scaled-up file — and for the fabric it's going on, since a stretchy fleece needs more underlay and push-and-pull compensation than a stable twill cap.

Buyers new to embroidery sometimes think the setup fee is a one-time nuisance charge like a screen charge and expect it waived on every reorder; because embroidery digitizing produces a reusable file tied to one specific size and garment type, only true repeat orders at the same size skip it — a size or garment change means starting over.
