Dwell Time

Dwell time is how many seconds a heat press stays closed on a transfer, one of the three variables (with temperature and pressure) that decide bond quality.

Dwell time is the count on the press timer between the platen closing and it popping back open — typically 8 to 15 seconds for DTF transfers, 10 to 15 for standard HTV, and up to 45 seconds for some sublimation blanks that need longer to let dye gas fully transfer into a polymer coating. It works together with temperature and pressure, not independently: a transfer spec'd for 305°F/12 seconds/medium pressure isn't interchangeable with 280°F/20 seconds, even though both might look done off the press.

For a shop running volume, dwell time is the number that sets your throughput ceiling — a 12-second press means five shirts a minute per station if everything else moves fast, and shaving even two seconds off without ruining adhesion is real money over a thousand-piece order. We learned the hard way on a youth-tee run that a rack of 100% cotton kids' shirts wicks heat away faster than adult tri-blend, so the same 12-second setting that worked all morning underperformed once we switched fabric weights mid-shift.

Pros treat the transfer manufacturer's printed dwell spec as the starting point, then verify with a peel test on a scrap piece before running the batch — press a sample, let it hit the correct peel temperature, and check whether the film releases clean with the ink fully bonded. Adjust in small increments (one to two seconds, five degrees) rather than guessing wildly, since compounding two wrong variables makes it hard to tell which one caused a bad print.

The common mistake is assuming a longer press is always a safer press. Overdwelling scorches fabric, yellows white polyester, and over-cures adhesive powder into a stiff, crackable layer — it doesn't add insurance, it just moves the failure point from underbonding to overbaking.
