Bean stitch
Bean stitch is a running stitch sewn three times over the same short path, producing a thicker, corded outline common on retro logos and embroidered patches.
Stitch the same short path forward, back, and forward again — three passes stacked on one another — and you've built a bean stitch. Each pass typically covers 2mm to 3mm before the machine steps to the next segment, and the tripling gives the line real body: instead of a flat pen-thin outline, you get a slightly raised, corded edge that catches light differently than a single running stitch.
We reach for bean stitch constantly on throwback logos and merrowed-edge patch borders because it reads as hand-drawn rather than machine-perfect — think varsity script, vintage badge lettering, or the bold outline around an applique number. It costs more stitches than a plain running stitch, roughly triple, but far fewer than filling the same shape solid.
Digitizers use bean stitch selectively — on the outer edge of letters, around applique pieces, or as a border on a patch — rather than across an entire design, since tripling every line in a complex logo balloons stitch count fast. It pairs well with fill stitch in the interior and a lighter running stitch on finer interior details.
A common mix-up is assuming bean stitch is just a thicker thread. It's the same thread — the boldness comes entirely from stitching the same path multiple times, which is why a digitizer, not a thread change, decides whether a logo gets that retro look.
