Unisex Sizing

Unisex sizing is built on the men's pattern block: straight sides, a boxy cut through the torso, no shaping at the waist. It's the default for most custom apparel because one size run covers a men's and women's order at the same time without the shop stocking two separate charts. Teams and event organizers default to unisex sizing because it simplifies a group order down to one size chart everyone can reference. The tradeoff shows up on women wearing it: the straight cut leaves extra room through the waist and hips compared to a garment shaped for a female torso, which is why plenty of women who order a unisex tee describe it as fitting more like a men's shirt than they expected.

Pros tell women customers to size down one, sometimes two sizes from whatever they'd normally wear in a women's-cut top. Someone who wears a women's medium typically lands in a unisex small, since the unisex chest measurement runs several inches roomier at the same letter size.

The mistake is treating unisex as though it fits every body type equally well. It's built around average male torso proportions and works adequately, not ideally, on other builds. A buyer who wants a shaped, fitted silhouette for a women's order is better off asking about a dedicated women's fit rather than just dropping down a unisex size and hoping.
