Solution-dyed

Solution-dyed fiber has pigment added to the molten polymer before extrusion, locking color into synthetic fiber for the best fade resistance available in polyester goods.

Solution dyeing, also called dope dyeing, happens at the very start of synthetic fiber production: pigment gets mixed directly into the molten polymer before it's pushed through the spinneret and extruded into filament. The color becomes part of the fiber's actual structure rather than a coating applied afterward, which is why solution-dyed polyester and acrylic post some of the best lightfastness numbers in textiles — commercial awning and outdoor-fabric makers use the same process for exactly that reason.

In custom apparel, this mostly shows up in performance caps, athletic polyester, and outdoor-branded softshells, where UV exposure and repeated hot washing would strip a conventionally dyed synthetic within a season. We had a golf-apparel client spec solution-dyed poly after a prior run of piece-dyed polos went visibly chalky on the shoulders following one summer of sun exposure; the reorder in solution-dyed fabric held its color through the same conditions.

Spec solution-dyed synthetic fiber for anything living outdoors — event tents, outdoor uniforms, boat and golf apparel — where UV and chlorine exposure are a given, not an edge case.

Buyers sometimes assume "solution-dyed" is just marketing language for any bright polyester. It's a specific step at the fiber stage, and a supplier should be able to confirm it rather than just point at a vivid color swatch.
