Moisture-Wicking Fabric

Moisture-wicking fabric, almost always polyester, pulls sweat away from skin to its outer surface for fast evaporation, unlike absorbent cotton.

Moisture-wicking fabric moves sweat away from skin to the fabric's outer surface, where it evaporates faster, a property built into the fiber itself. Polyester's non-absorbent filament structure pulls moisture along its surface through capillary action rather than soaking it up the way cotton does, which is why nearly all true wicking tees run 100% polyester or a poly-heavy blend, sometimes with a moisture-management finish layered on top.

This is what buyers are actually asking for when they search "dri-fit" or "performance tee" for a 5K, a softball league, or a gym — Sport-Tek's PosiCharge Competitor and Augusta Sportswear's Attain lines are built around this exact property, not cotton at all. We get requests for "moisture-wicking cotton" on a regular basis and have to explain that's a contradiction — cotton absorbs and holds moisture, the opposite of what wicking fabric does.

Because moisture-wicking fabric is almost always high in polyester content, decoration shifts too: screen printing needs low-bleed ink to fight dye migration, and full-color art often does better as sublimation or DTF transfer than plastisol, since sublimation dyes into the polyester itself rather than sitting on the surface. Glitter and puff inks also tend to perform worse on the slicker, more flexible wicking surface.

Not every tee labeled "athletic" or "performance" actually wicks moisture — some athletic-cut tees are just cotton or cotton-blend fabric cut for movement, with no wicking property at all. Check the fiber content on the spec sheet, not just the marketing language on the hang-tag, before promising a customer sweat-management performance.
