Reactive dye
Reactive dye is a cotton dye class that forms a permanent chemical bond with the fiber, giving bright color that resists fading, bleeding, and repeated washing.
Reactive dye bonds directly to cotton's cellulose molecules through a covalent reaction, not just a surface coating the way some cheaper dye classes work. The process runs in an alkaline soda-ash bath, usually between 140°F and 180°F, and once the reaction completes, the color becomes chemically part of the fiber rather than something sitting on top of it. That bond is why reactive-dyed cotton routinely scores 4 to 5 on the AATCC gray scale for wash fastness, and why reds, purples, and deep blues stay vivid instead of dulling into pastel versions of themselves.
On the floor, that's the difference between a shirt that still looks new after fifty washes and one that fades to a ghost of its original color by wash twenty. A reactive-dyed Bella+Canvas 3001 in True Royal or Navy holds that shade through a year of weekly wear; we've had customers bring shirts back eighteen months after printing specifically because the garment color hadn't drifted enough to need a reorder match. That stability also protects your print, since bleeding dye can migrate into plastisol ink or a white underbase and tint it.
Spec reactive dye whenever a job has real laundering ahead of it — team uniforms, retail racks, anything reordered across multiple seasons. It costs mills more than direct dye, so it tends to show up on mid-tier and premium cotton blanks rather than the cheapest closeout goods.
Buyers often assume any cotton shirt's color quality is equal because two blanks look identical fresh out of the bag. Reactive and direct dye are nearly impossible to tell apart on day one — the gap only shows up after repeated washing, which is exactly why dye class belongs on a blank spec sheet, not a same-day swatch check.
