Direct dye
Direct dye is a low-cost cotton dye that colors fiber by absorption rather than a chemical bond — fast and cheap, but less wash-fast than reactive dye.
Direct dye colors cotton through straightforward absorption — the dye molecules are drawn into the fiber by an affinity for cellulose and held there mostly by physical attraction and hydrogen bonding, not a chemical bond the way reactive dye forms. It dyes at a lower temperature, needs less time in the bath, and skips the soda-ash fixing step, which is exactly why mills favor it: lower energy cost, faster turnaround, cheaper finished goods. The tradeoff shows up on the wash-fastness scale, where direct dye typically lands around 2 to 3 on the AATCC gray scale versus reactive dye's 4 to 5.
This is the dye class behind a lot of the sub-$3 cotton tees in closeout blank catalogs — the color looks fine on the shelf and through the first several washes, then starts shedding into the wash water and dulling noticeably faster than a comparable reactive-dyed shirt. We've seen direct-dyed maroon blanks bleed enough in a hot wash to tint a white gym towel pink, which is a real problem when you're printing a light-colored design over dark direct-dyed cotton.
Direct dye is a reasonable choice for short-run promo tees, one-event giveaways, or anything with a laundering life measured in weeks rather than years, where price matters more than five-year colorfastness.
Buyers assume cotton is cotton, but the dye class underneath two identical-looking blanks explains why one brand's navy holds and another's goes gray-blue after a season — worth asking your blank supplier which dye class they use before committing to a large reorder.
