Pigment dye

Pigment dye coats the outside of each fiber instead of bonding into it, producing a faded, vintage color that keeps softening with every wash.

Pigment dye works differently from fiber-reactive dyeing chemically: instead of forming a bond inside the fiber's molecular structure, pigment particles sit mechanically on the fiber's surface, held there by a binder. That surface-level attachment is exactly why pigment-dyed color fades gradually and predictably wash after wash, rather than holding a flat, saturated shade indefinitely the way a reactive-dyed shirt does.

For the buyer, pigment dye is the process behind that lived-in, sun-faded look on a garment-washed hoodie or a heather-toned tee straight off the rack, no distressing or bleach required, just the dye chemistry itself. On a heavyweight fleece like a pigment-dyed crewneck, color often looks slightly different at the seams and high-wear points, since those areas shed surface pigment fastest.

Pros spec pigment dye specifically when a brand wants that broken-in aesthetic without waiting for a hundred customer washes to get there, and they'll pair it with a garment wash or enzyme wash to speed up the softening. It's a poor choice for anyone needing color to stay identical five years and fifty washes later.

Buyers sometimes read pigment-dyed fading as a manufacturing defect; it's the dye process working exactly as designed, and a shirt still fading at wash thirty is behaving normally, not falling apart.
