Enzyme Wash

Enzyme wash uses cellulase enzymes instead of stones to break down surface fuzz, producing a soft hand and gentle fade with less fabric damage.

Enzyme wash swaps pumice stones for cellulase enzymes that chemically nibble away the short, fuzzy fibers standing up off the fabric surface, run in a wash bath at roughly 120-140°F and a controlled acidic pH near 4.5 to 5.5 to keep the enzyme active. The result, often called bio-polishing, leaves a noticeably softer hand and a gentle color fade without a single stone ever touching the garment.

For a print shop, this is the wash to spec when a buyer wants that broken-in softness on a heavier fleece or french terry hoodie without the seam stress and torn-thread risk stone washing carries. We've swapped several accounts from a light stone wash to an enzyme wash purely to cut the reject rate on embroidered pieces — the enzymes don't have the mechanical bite that catches on stitching.

Spec enzyme wash whenever fabric strength matters as much as hand feel — activewear, fleece, anything getting heavy embroidery — and reserve stone washing for garments where a rougher, more obviously distressed look is the actual goal. Enzyme baths can also be combined with a light stone cycle for a stronger fade when buyers want both softness and visible wear.

Buyers sometimes assume enzyme wash and stone wash produce the same finish since both soften and fade fabric, but enzyme wash causes measurably less fiber damage — typically a low single-digit percentage strength loss versus 15% or more with a heavy stone cycle — which matters on anything meant to survive years of laundering.
