Pantone Matching System (PMS)
The Pantone Matching System is a universal numbered color library, like PMS 186 C, that lets a buyer specify one exact ink color across print shops and reorders.
The Pantone Matching System, or PMS, is a standardized library of thousands of numbered spot colors — PMS 186 C is a specific red, PMS 2935 C is a specific blue — where every number corresponds to an exact, reproducible ink formula regardless of who's mixing it or what press it's running on. Each color exists in coated (C) and uncoated (U) versions, since ink reads differently depending on the paper or substrate finish.
This matters most on spot-color screen printing, where a shop mixes plastisol ink to hit a specific PMS number rather than approximating it through CMYK process printing. A buyer with a brand guideline that says the logo runs in PMS 286 C can hand that number to any print shop in the country and get back the same blue, instead of hoping a description like "royal blue" lands close enough.
Always give your printer the PMS number, not a hex code or a screen color, when brand color accuracy matters — screens display RGB, and RGB-to-PMS conversion is only ever an approximation, sometimes a rough one. If you don't know your brand's PMS number, a good shop can match a physical sample or an existing printed piece against a Pantone book and give you the closest number to lock in going forward.
The mistake buyers make is assuming a color that looks right on a monitor or in a PDF will print as that exact shade. RGB and PMS are different color systems built for different jobs — a spot color chosen and confirmed by its PMS number is the only way to guarantee the same red shows up on a shirt printed this year and again on a reorder printed three years from now.
