Mirroring
Mirroring is flipping a heat-transfer-vinyl design horizontally in cutting software before the plotter blade cuts it, so it reads correctly once weeded and pressed.
Mirroring means flipping artwork left-to-right in the cutting software — Cricut Design Space, SignCut, FlexiSign — before the vinyl ever reaches the blade. Cut heat-transfer vinyl loads shiny-carrier-side up, so the plotter is cutting into the back of the design; anything with direction, like letters or numbers, comes out backward on the shirt if that flip never happens. It's strictly a cut-vinyl problem: printable HTV and DTF transfers print face-up onto film, so the printer lays the art down correctly the first time and no mirror step exists.
This is where most DIY personalization jobs go sideways. A customer supplying a file for a monogrammed tote or a jersey name-and-number will sometimes mirror the art themselves in Photoshop and then hand it to a shop that also mirrors automatically before cutting — the two flips cancel out and the name prints backward. We ask every walk-in ordering personalization one question before cutting: has this already been mirrored?
The working rule: anything with legible text or an asymmetrical logo needs the flip; solid shapes, block-style numbers, and symmetrical marks don't care either way. Shops that run a lot of cut-vinyl jobs build the mirror into the cut-file template itself, so the flip happens exactly once, at the design stage, never again at the press.
The misconception we correct constantly: mirroring happens at the press, by flipping the sheet of vinyl over before pressing. It doesn't — turn a weeded transfer adhesive-side up and the plastic carrier presses straight into the garment with no bond at all. The flip belongs in software, before cutting, full stop.
