Vector Artwork

Vector artwork is image data built from mathematical paths rather than pixels, so it scales to any size without losing sharpness or edge quality.

Vector artwork stores a design as points, curves, and fills, an Adobe Illustrator .AI file, an .EPS, or an .SVG, rather than a fixed grid of pixels. That structure means the same file prints crisp at 2 inches on a sleeve or 20 inches across a full back with zero loss of edge quality. Screen printers rely on vector files to burn color separations and cut clean stencils, and DTF or vinyl cutters read the vector paths directly to trace a design's outline.

A raster photo saved as a 300 dpi JPEG holds up fine at its native size, but enlarge it 200% for a bigger placement and the edges turn soft and pixelated almost immediately. Vector art has no native size to outgrow, which is why sign shops and print shops alike ask for it before quoting anything larger than a small chest logo.

Pros ask for a native vector file, AI, EPS, or a PDF built from true vector layers, before a job ever hits the press. Rebuilding a blurry raster logo into clean vector paths is a separate paid service called vectorization, usually billed by the hour or per logo, and it always adds turnaround time compared to starting from vector art the client already had on hand.

The mistake buyers make is assuming any PDF, or any big high-resolution image, counts as vector. A PDF can have a raster photo embedded right inside it, and a huge PNG file is still built from pixels, not paths, no matter how large the file size is. Scale that file up for an 18-inch back print and it pixelates exactly the way a small JPEG would.
