Metallic thread

Metallic thread wraps a thin layer of metallic foil or polyester film around a core filament, which is what gives it a reflective shine polyester and rayon can't match on their own. It's noticeably more abrasive on machine components than standard thread, and most shops run it at reduced machine speed — often dropping from 900+ stitches per minute down closer to 400-600 — to avoid excess thread breaks and needle friction.

Buyers reach for metallic on holiday runs, awards and recognition apparel, dance and cheer uniforms, and anywhere a logo needs a genuine glint under stage or store lighting that no thread color alone provides. A gold metallic accent on a varsity letter or a silver outline on a black jacket reads as premium the moment someone sees it in person, which is exactly why it shows up on that segment of orders.

Pros use metallic sparingly — as an accent color or outline rather than a full fill — both because dense metallic fill breaks more often mid-run and because the visual impact comes from contrast, not coverage. Expect an upcharge on quotes that include it: the slower run speed and higher break rate mean more machine time per unit, and that cost gets passed through.

A mistake we see is a customer assuming metallic thread runs exactly like any other color swap with no cost or schedule impact. It's a different thread with different tension and speed requirements, so a design with metallic fill needs a re-run of tension settings and typically adds turnaround time versus a same-day standard-thread job.
