Metallic HTV

Ask for metallic HTV and you're asking for standard-thickness vinyl — about 3 to 4 mil, same as a basic matte color — finished with a metallic pigment that gives it chrome-like shine straight through the material rather than as a surface layer. It cuts, weeds, and presses like any smooth vinyl, around 305°F for 10 to 15 seconds under medium pressure, with no special handling beyond the fact that fine detail can burnish slightly during weeding if fingernails drag across the shiny face.

Buyers comparing metallic to foil transfer are usually chasing the same gold-or-silver look and don't realize the two are built completely differently. Metallic HTV is one continuous colored vinyl, so it survives normal wash-and-dry cycles the way any cut vinyl does — commonly rated well past 50 home washes. Foil, by contrast, is a thin decorative layer bonded to adhesive and tends to crack or dull much sooner.

Spec metallic HTV whenever a design needs a gold or silver accent that has to survive years of laundering — sports numbers, uniform trim, retail-bound merch — and reserve foil for shorter-life pieces like event shirts or one-off gifts where maximum shine matters more than longevity. Metallic layers into a multicolor stack the same as any smooth vinyl, with no special ordering restrictions.

Foil's mirror-flat brilliance is what buyers picture when they hear "metallic," and metallic HTV doesn't deliver quite that. Its shine comes from pigment baked into the film, which reads as a soft, brushed shimmer rather than a true mirror reflection. If a customer's reference photo shows a blinding chrome logo, that's foil, not metallic.
