Foil Transfer
Foil transfer is a two-step process pressing thin metallic foil onto a heat-activated adhesive design, giving the most mirror-bright shine available but shorter wash life.
Foil transfer is a two-step job: press an adhesive base first — cut vinyl or screen-printed foil glue — at around 305°F, then lay a sheet of thin metallic foil color-side up over that tacky adhesive and press again, typically 300 to 320°F for 10 to 15 seconds. The backing film peels away hot, right off the press, transferring the foil's color onto the adhesive beneath — that hot-peel step is what gives foil its glass-like shine, brighter than either metallic or holographic HTV can match.
Foil is the go-to when a customer's reference image is a genuinely mirror-flat gold or silver logo — bachelorette shirts, dance recital numbers, a one-night event tee where the design needs to catch every camera flash. It comes in dozens of colors and patterns beyond plain gold and silver, including holographic and marbled foils, sold by the roll and priced by coverage area rather than per shirt.
Because the foil layer is thin and sits on top of adhesive rather than being one solid vinyl film, pros reserve it for shorter-life garments and lower-friction placements — a chest logo rather than a sleeve that rubs against a bag strap all day. Expect meaningfully fewer wash cycles before cracking or dulling than a comparable metallic HTV piece, and say so up front on anything meant to last seasons rather than one event.
Foil gets ordered expecting vinyl-grade wash durability more often than any other specialty finish we carry. It trades longevity for shine — genuinely the most brilliant metallic finish available, but it will crack and flake sooner than metallic HTV on the same garment. Need years of laundering?
