Low-Temperature Transfer

A low-temperature transfer is heat transfer material formulated to fully bond below roughly 270-280°F, letting it apply to fabrics that scorch at standard temperatures.

Low-temperature transfers are formulated, through a different adhesive chemistry or a lower-melt plastisol, to fully bond and cure at 250-275°F rather than the 320-330°F standard transfers need, and often with a shorter dwell as well. That lower threshold is the whole point: it sits below where heat-sensitive synthetics start to scorch, shrink, or glaze.

Nylon jackets, spandex-heavy performance wear, and some poly-cotton athletic blends can't survive a standard-temp press without visible damage, so low-temp transfers are how those garments get decorated at all rather than being decoration-proof by default. We keep a separate low-temp press program specifically for nylon windbreakers and swim-team parkas — running our normal plastisol settings on that fabric would scorch it before the ink ever finished curing.

Shops choose low-temp product any time the garment's care label or fiber content flags heat sensitivity, and always confirm with a test press on scrap fabric first, since "low temp" varies by manufacturer — some transfers are rated for 250°F, others need 275°F minimum to bond fully. Pressure and dwell usually need to increase slightly to compensate for the lower heat and still reach a full, durable bond.

The mistake buyers make is assuming any transfer can be forced onto a heat-sensitive fabric just by turning the press down. A standard-temp transfer pressed at 250°F often won't bond at all, leaving ink that peels off in the first wash, because it was never formulated to activate at that lower threshold. Low-temp isn't a setting change; it's a different transfer chemistry built for the job.
