Low-Impact Dyes
Low-impact dyes are fiber-reactive dyes formulated for high fixation, meaning less unfixed dye, heavy metal, and toxic runoff wash out during dyeing.
Low-impact dyes are reactive dyes engineered to bond, not to rinse away. Standard fiber-reactive dyeing on cotton commonly fixes somewhere around 60 to 70% of the dye onto the fabric, with the rest washing out as effluent; formulations marketed as low-impact push that fixation rate meaningfully higher, cutting the volume of dye-laden wastewater a mill has to treat, and they skip the heavy metals and toxic mordants some older dye classes relied on. GOTS-certified facilities restrict which dye classes and auxiliary chemicals are allowed and require the wastewater to be treated before discharge.
This is the claim sitting on the tag of a garment-dyed sustainable tee, or a Tencel or lyocell piece, since both fiber types take reactive dye especially well. A brand paying extra for this isn't buying a different-looking color — it's buying a specific certified dye recipe and a treated-wastewater process at the dye house.
Vet the claim by asking for the certification behind it — GOTS's approved dye list, bluesign, or Oeko-Tex — rather than trusting "low-impact" as a bare label; shade consistency and colorfastness can still vary dye house to dye house under the same umbrella term.
Buyers assume low-impact means the dye is plant-based or natural. It usually isn't — most low-impact dyes are still synthetic reactive chemistry. The improvement is in fixation rate and wastewater treatment, not in swapping out synthetic dye for a botanical one.
