Heat Press Pressure

Heat press pressure is the light, medium, or firm platen setting a transfer's instructions specify, controlling how firmly adhesive gets forced into the garment's fibers.

Heat press pressure gets described in three rough bands, light, medium, and firm, and most operators test it the old way: sliding a sheet of paper under the closed platen and feeling how much drag resists pulling it out. Firm pressure should barely let a business card slide through; medium leaves noticeably more give, and light is closer to the press just barely making contact.

Every transfer instruction sheet lists a pressure alongside temperature and time, because pressure is what physically forces melted adhesive down into the weave of the fabric rather than leaving it sitting on top. Skip that step, or run it too light, and a transfer that looks perfectly applied the day it's pressed will start lifting at the corners after two or three washes.

Garment thickness changes the effective pressure even at the same platen setting; a folded hem, a side seam, or a hoodie's ribbed cuff under the print area adds thickness that eats into the gap, so pros adjust the knob per garment rather than leaving it at one setting all day. Too much pressure causes its own problems on glitter or foil transfers specifically, squeezing decorative material out sideways and leaving a thin, patchy result instead of full coverage.

Buyers often assume more pressure is simply better, the same instinct that says a tighter grip holds better, but a transfer pressed too firm on a thin, stretchy knit can leave a shiny impression or a ghost outline in the fabric itself. The correct setting depends on the specific transfer material, not on cranking the press as hard as it goes.
