Fluorescent (Neon) Ink
Fluorescent ink is a specialty pigment that absorbs invisible UV wavelengths and re-emits them as visible light, producing neon shades standard pigment can't match.
Ordinary pigment reflects only the visible light that hits it. Fluorescent ink does something different — it absorbs UV energy present in daylight and shop lighting and re-emits part of it as additional visible light, which is why a fluorescent pink or lime green looks like it's glowing from within rather than just sitting bright on the shirt. The chemistry only comes in a handful of base shades, typically yellow, orange, pink, green, and blue, because fluorescent pigment formulation is a narrower science than the full pigment range used for standard spot colors.
Race organizers, festival merch buyers, and dance or cheer programs lean on fluorescent ink because no combination of standard CMYK or spot-color plastisol reaches that same punch — you cannot separate a neon orange out of process colors the way you can a normal hue; it has to be mixed and printed as its own spot ink. On a black Gildan tee it needs an underbase for full opacity, same as any other color, or the fluorescent effect gets muddy and dark.
Pros spec fluorescent ink knowing it fades faster than standard plastisol pigment under repeated washing and direct sun, since the fluorescent brighteners break down with UV exposure over time. That's an acceptable trade for a shirt that only needs to look sharp for one race season or one festival weekend, less so for a logo tee meant to hold its color for years.
Buyers commonly assume a design house can simulate neon in full-color process separations. It can't — fluorescent shades sit outside the CMYK gamut entirely, so any neon element in the art has to be pulled out and printed as a dedicated fluorescent spot color, not folded into the four-color stack.
