Bio-Polishing

Bio-polishing uses cellulase enzymes to trim the tiny fibers protruding from cotton yarn, leaving a smoother, less pill-prone surface for printing.

Every spun yarn has short fiber ends sticking up off its surface, and it's those stray ends that snag together, ball up, and eventually show up as pills on a worn shirt. Bio-polishing treats the fabric with cellulase enzymes during wet processing; the enzymes selectively break down those protruding microfibers, and a mechanical tumbling step afterward physically removes what's left behind. The result is a cleaner, slightly glossier yarn surface with fewer loose ends to catch on anything.

We spec bio-polished cotton on any job with a fine halftone or small serif type, because that leftover surface fuzz is exactly what makes small dots and thin strokes go fuzzy at the edges when ink wicks along a stray fiber instead of stopping at the line. Premium ringspun combed cottons commonly run through this step before cutting; a basic promotional blank usually skips it, and you can see the difference under a loupe before you even print on it.

When a client's art has fine detail or the run is going to see heavy wear and repeat washing — think retail apparel meant to survive a season, not a one-off event tee — bio-polished fabric earns its extra cost through reduced pilling and a print surface that holds edges better. On a single-color flash-cure fundraiser shirt with bold type, it's money spent on a benefit nobody will notice.

People sometimes assume bio-polishing is a bleach or acid treatment because it changes the fabric's hand and sheen. It isn't — it's biological, using enzymes rather than harsh chemistry, which is also why it's gentler on fiber strength than mechanical shearing methods that try to accomplish the same smoothing.
