DTF (Direct-to-Film) Printing
DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing prints a design onto a special film, then heat-presses it onto almost any fabric or garment color, cotton, polyester, or blends alike.
DTF, or Direct-to-Film, printing lays CMYK and white ink in reverse onto a PET film rather than onto the garment itself, dusts a hot-melt adhesive powder over the still-wet ink, and cures it before the film ever touches fabric. At application, a heat press bonds the transfer to the garment, typically around 300 to 325°F for roughly 10 to 15 seconds, then the film peels away hot or cold depending on which ink and film system was used.
We've moved more than one customer off DTG and onto DTF the moment their reorder switched from a cotton tee to a dark 50/50 poly-cotton hoodie, because the adhesive layer bonds to synthetic fiber in a way DTG's ink simply doesn't. That's what makes DTF the default quote for poly blends, tri-blends, nylon outerwear, and dark garments generally, situations where DTG and even some screen printing setups struggle to hold color cleanly.
Because the design prints to film first, shops can batch transfers on a gang sheet and store them, pressing to a garment only once an order actually comes in, unlike DTG which prints at press time. The trade-off is hand: DTF sits on top of the fabric with more of a plastic-like feel than DTG's ink, which soaks into the fibers.
Buyers sometimes treat digital printing as one interchangeable process and expect DTF on a soft cotton tee to feel exactly like DTG. It won't, DTF's adhesive layer gives it a noticeably thicker, more surface-level hand than DTG's absorbed ink, and that difference in feel is the trade buyers make for DTF's broader fabric and color reach.
