Blocker Base (Barrier Base)

Blocker base is a specialty underlayer flash-cured before the print to seal in a polyester garment's dye and stop it from migrating into the ink above.

Blocker base — also called barrier base — is printed and flash-cured first, before any color layer, forming a physical seal over the fabric so garment dye can't sublime upward into the ink during the higher heat of final curing. It's a different job from a standard white underbase: an underbase exists for opacity, so the colors on top read true; blocker base exists specifically to stop dye migration, and shops sometimes run both, underbase over blocker, on the toughest jobs.

This matters most on 100% polyester and poly-heavy tri-blend garments dyed in reactive colors — red, black, and navy polyester jerseys are notorious for it — where the dye sublimates at the roughly 320°F-plus temperatures a conveyor dryer hits during final cure and bleeds a pink or gray halo straight through a plain white print. We've had a client's brand-new team jerseys come back from the dryer with every white number tinted salmon because the shop skipped this step on a bright-red poly blank.

Pros spec blocker base by default on poly athletic jerseys, cheer uniforms, and any bright or dark polyester blank, flashing it fully before the underbase or color goes down — skipping the flash and printing wet-on-wet defeats the barrier entirely. It does add a screen, a flash station, and slightly more hand to the finished print, a trade buyers accept once they've seen a bleed problem firsthand.

The mistake we correct often: assuming a standard white underbase already blocks dye migration because it's opaque and sits between the shirt and the ink. It doesn't — underbase blocks light, not chemistry. Sublimating dye passes straight through a plain underbase during the cure; only a formulated blocker base actually seals against it.
