Poly-Cotton Blend (50/50)
A poly-cotton blend combines roughly equal parts polyester and cotton fiber, cutting shrinkage and cost versus 100% cotton while keeping a soft, breathable hand.
A 50/50 poly-cotton blend combines equal parts polyester and cotton fiber in the yarn itself, splitting the difference between cotton's soft, breathable hand and polyester's durability and shrink resistance. Typical residual shrinkage runs under 3%, versus 5% or more on a 100% cotton tee that isn't well pre-shrunk, and the blend resists wrinkling and dries faster than straight cotton too.
Gildan's 8000 DryBlend and Fruit of the Loom's HD 50/50 built entire product lines on this exact ratio, because it's the cheapest way to get a durable, low-shrink tee that still feels like cotton against skin. It's our go-to recommendation for uniforms and workwear that get washed weekly — a 100% cotton tee in that rotation shrinks and fades noticeably faster than its 50/50 counterpart.
Screen printers should expect a slightly different hand on 50/50 blends versus 100% cotton — the print sits a touch stiffer since the poly fibers don't absorb ink the way cotton does, and darker poly-blend fabric carries the same dye-migration risk as straight polyester, just diluted by half. For soft, vintage-style discharge printing, straight cotton still wins; for durability and lower cost per unit on bulk orders, 50/50 is the better spec.
A shirt that's "still mostly cotton" isn't off the hook for dye migration — the polyester half of a 50/50 blend is enough to bleed under a hot cure on darker colors, and the print sits slightly stiffer than on straight cotton too. Test cure on the actual blend and color before running a full order, not on a cotton test shirt that won't behave the same way.
