Bleach Wash (Reverse Tie-Dye)

Bleach wash, or reverse tie-dye, uses chlorine bleach to strip color from a dark garment instead of adding dye, creating a lightened pattern.

Bleach wash — often called reverse tie-dye — pulls color out of a dark garment instead of adding it, using a chlorine-based bleach (sodium hypochlorite) or a thickened bleach gel sprayed, dipped, or stenciled directly onto the fabric. The reaction has to be stopped with a neutralizer like sodium bisulfite or a commercial bleach-stop solution within minutes, or the chlorine keeps eating at the cotton fibers and weakens the fabric long after the color has lifted.

This is the go-to method for custom graphics on black and navy blanks, since screen printing light ink over dark fabric usually needs an underbase that adds cost and stiffens the hand — bleaching the design in skips the underbase entirely. It only behaves predictably on 100% cotton reactive- or pigment-dyed goods; run it on a poly-cotton blend and the polyester doesn't bleach out, it often shifts to an ugly orange or pink instead of clean white.

Pros test bleach concentration and dwell time on a scrap cutting from the actual dye lot before running a full order, because two "black" shirts from different dye lots can bleach to completely different shades of gold, rust, or cream. Stenciled bleach designs need a resist barrier — freezer paper, vinyl, or a bleach-resistant screen emulsion — to keep the chemical off everything but the printed area.

Buyers frequently assume any dark shirt will bleach out to a clean white, but the finished color depends entirely on the garment's original dye chemistry — some blacks bleach orange, some navy shirts bleach a muddy tan, and 100% polyester barely bleaches at all. Always bleach-test the actual blank before quoting a color result.
