Antimicrobial Finish

An antimicrobial finish bonds an agent like silver ion or zinc pyrithione to fabric fiber to slow bacterial growth and the odor it causes between washes.

Mills apply antimicrobial finishes by exhausting or spraying an active agent onto the fabric so it bonds to the fiber surface rather than just coating it loosely. Silver-ion compounds, zinc pyrithione, and quaternary ammonium chemistries are the common actives, and each works the same basic way: disrupting bacterial cell walls or reproduction on contact so the odor-causing bacteria that feed on sweat never get established. Efficacy gets validated against standards like AATCC 100, which measures percent bacterial reduction after exposure, or ISO 20743.

This finish shows up on gym-branded quarter-zips, healthcare-adjacent polos, and hospitality staff uniforms for the same reason: these are garments worn hard, washed on a commercial schedule, and expected to not smell by the end of a shift. A poly-blend polo with an antimicrobial finish holds up through that cycle noticeably better than an untreated one washed on the same schedule.

Before promising a client that odor control lasts the life of the garment, get the durability number from the finish supplier — most are rated for a specific wash count, often somewhere in the 20-50 range, and repeated hot-water commercial laundering common in healthcare settings burns through that rating faster than home washing does. Reorder timing should account for that, not just fabric wear.

Buyers commonly assume an antimicrobial finish also means stain resistance or moisture wicking, since all three get marketed together on performance apparel. It only targets bacterial and odor-causing microbial growth; liquid stains and sweat management are handled by entirely separate finishes and need to be spec'd on their own.
