Youth sizes cover kids' apparel from YXS up through YXL. On a Gildan 5000B, that's roughly a 20-inch chest and 16-inch body length at YXS, climbing to around a 40-inch chest and 26-inch length by YXL, with size labels loosely tied to age brackets, 4-6 for XS, 14-16 for XL, rather than a fixed formula every brand follows the same way. Grading between youth steps runs about 2 inches per size, tighter than the roughly 2.5 to 3 inch jump between adult sizes.

Schools and youth sports teams live in this size range, ordering across five or six youth sizes plus a handful of adult smalls for the older kids on the roster. That smaller chest also shrinks the usable print area: a full front design that runs 12 inches wide on an adult shirt has to come down to around 8 or 9 inches wide to fit a youth chest without crowding the side seams.

Pros build a dedicated youth print file rather than proportionally shrinking the adult art, because a 12-inch design resized straight down to 8 inches often makes small text illegible. Redrawing the type at a legible minimum size for the smaller footprint takes more effort up front but keeps the design readable at every size in the order.

The mistake buyers make is assuming youth sizing lines up directly with a child's actual age. A youth medium fits kids anywhere from roughly 8 to 10 years old depending on the blank's cut, and that range shifts again between brands, so checking the specific brand's youth size chart beats ordering by age alone, especially when mixing Gildan and Hanes blanks in the same run.
