Squeegee

A squeegee is the rubber-bladed tool dragged across a screen-printing screen to force ink through the mesh and onto the garment beneath.

A squeegee is just a handle holding a strip of polyurethane blade, but the blade's durometer (hardness, usually rated 60–90) and the angle it's held at do most of the work in determining what lands on the shirt. A softer blade, around 60–70 durometer, flexes more and pushes a thicker layer of ink through the mesh; a harder blade, 80–90, shears more cleanly and lays down a thinner, sharper deposit. Printers also vary the angle — closer to 45 degrees for print strokes that force ink through, closer to vertical for flood strokes that lay ink flat between prints.

This is one of those variables buyers never see on a spec sheet but feel immediately in the print. A soft squeegee at a shallow angle puts down heavy, opaque plastisol — great for bold logos on dark garments — while a hard blade at a steep angle gives a thin, translucent deposit suited to fine detail on lighter fabrics. We've had two shops print the same screen and ink and get visibly different hand-feel, purely from squeegee choice.

When troubleshooting a print that feels too thin or too heavy after a proof, squeegee setup is one of the first things a good shop checks, alongside mesh count and ink viscosity. Softer blades and shallower angles suit heavy coverage on dark garments; harder blades and steeper angles suit fine detail and halftones on lighter fabrics.

Buyers sometimes assume ink thickness is purely a function of the ink itself. It isn't — the same plastisol printed with a soft squeegee at a low angle versus a hard one at a steep angle can feel like two different inks. If a reprint doesn't match an original's hand-feel, squeegee setup is a real suspect before blaming the ink batch.
