Spirality (Torque)

Spirality, or torque, is a knit tee's tendency to twist its side seams around the body after washing, dragging a centered print off-center.

Spirality comes from how a circular knitting machine builds fabric: the needles feed yarn in a helix, and if the yarn's own twist direction isn't balanced against that feed, the finished tube wants to untwist itself the first time it's agitated in a washer. AATCC 179 measures the effect directly, tracking how many degrees a marked vertical line rotates around the tube after a set number of home-laundering cycles. Mills selling premium blanks target under 5% seam displacement; a cheap, untested open-end knit can spiral 10-15 degrees after just a handful of washes.

A customer sees this as a crooked print, not a fabric defect, and that's the call we field. A chest logo printed dead-center on a flat blank can end up sitting a full inch off toward one hip after the shirt has spiraled, and no amount of careful screen registration would have prevented it — the shirt moved, the ink didn't. It's most visible on lightweight single jersey and least visible on heavier, tightly knit interlock, which resists torque simply by being denser.

For anything with strict registration — a small left-chest mark, a design that has to read as level — spec a blank the mill has actually torque-tested, not just one that feels stable off the roll. Compacted, balanced-yarn cottons from the major blank suppliers carry published torque numbers for exactly this reason; an unbranded overseas import usually doesn't.

The mistake buyers make is assuming a twisted seam means the printer misregistered the art. Pull a torque-prone shirt before it's washed and the print sits perfectly straight — the distortion only shows up after the fabric relaxes into its natural spiral, which is a fabric-sourcing issue, not a press issue.
