Sanforized

Sanforized fabric has gone through a patented mechanical compressive-shrinking process that locks residual shrinkage to about 1% or less, tighter than a generic preshrunk claim.

Sanforization is a specific mechanical compressive-shrinking process, patented under the Sanforized trademark, that feeds fabric through rollers under controlled heat, moisture, and pressure to physically compact the weave before it's ever cut. Done right, it locks residual shrinkage to roughly 1% or less — tighter than the 3% to 5% a generic preshrunk claim can still carry. It's most associated with woven goods like denim and twill, though the same compaction principle shows up on some knit finishing lines too.

A sanforized denim or twill blank — the kind used for heavier workwear shirts or structured caps — holds its cut dimensions wash after wash, which matters enormously on anything with a tight-registration print or embroidery sitting near a seam. We spec sanforized twill for any edge-to-edge embroidered patch near a seam, because unsanforized fabric shifting even a little after one wash is enough to pucker stitching that was lying flat on press day.

Ask specifically for sanforized on the spec sheet, not just preshrunk, whenever the fabric is woven and the job involves tight placement tolerances or heavy repeat laundering — workwear, uniform programs, anything worn and washed for years. The tighter shrink control costs a little more per yard, but it heads off reprint claims down the line.

Preshrunk and sanforized get used as if they mean the same thing, and they don't. Sanforization is a specific, tested, trademarked mechanical process with a tight shrinkage ceiling; preshrunk is a looser, unregulated term that can mean anything from a full compressive-shrink line to a single rinse cycle.
