Overdyeing

Overdyeing means dyeing an already-dyed or already-printed garment again, layering a new tone over the base color instead of starting from white fabric.

Overdyeing submerges a garment that already has color — from a prior piece-dye run, a garment-dye cycle, or even a cured screen print — into a second dye bath, so the new pigment combines subtractively with whatever's already on the fiber. Dye a black hoodie in a rust bath and you get a warm brown-black; overdye a red tee in navy and it drifts toward plum. The process runs on the same commercial dye becks used for garment dyeing, with reactive dyes typically applied around 180°F to 200°F for 30 to 60 minutes.

Streetwear labels lean on overdyeing for exactly this unpredictability — no two garments in an overdyed run land on quite the same shade, because the underlying dye lot and any prior wash history both shift how much color the fiber takes up. We've overdyed a batch of screen-printed hoodies at a client's request to fake a thrifted, faded look, and the cured plastisol resisted the bath almost completely while the surrounding fabric drank color — that contrast between ink and cloth was the whole appeal, not a flaw to fix.

Pros test overdyeing on a cut swatch before committing a full run, since the outcome depends entirely on the base color and how saturated it already is — expect noticeable shade drift, sometimes 10% or more, between garments pulled from the same bath if their starting colors weren't identical. Cotton takes an overdye far more evenly than poly-blends, where the polyester fraction won't accept most dye classes at all.

The misconception we hear most is that overdyeing can push a garment toward any target color, light or dark. Because it's subtractive, overdyeing only ever moves a garment darker or more muted than its starting shade — you can turn navy into near-black, but you can't overdye navy into yellow.
