Measurement tolerance
Measurement tolerance is the manufacturer's allowed variance on a garment's stated dimensions, commonly plus or minus 1 inch on chest and length, built into every spec sheet on purpose.
Measurement tolerance is the plus-or-minus range a mill builds into its own spec sheet, acknowledging that no cutting and sewing process produces identical garments down to the eighth of an inch. A typical tee spec allows about half an inch of tolerance on chest width and up to a full inch on body length, with sleeve length often carrying a similar half-inch to inch allowance. These aren't errors — they're printed right on the manufacturer's own documentation as the expected range for that style.
For a buyer, this is the number that separates a legitimate quality complaint from normal production variance. If a customer lays two shirts from the same 100-piece order side by side and finds a 3/4-inch difference in body length, that's very likely within tolerance, not a defect — cutting tables, fabric relaxation, and even the day's humidity all nudge finished dimensions slightly. We've fielded return requests over exactly this kind of gap and had to point buyers to the brand's own published tolerance before they'd believe it wasn't a bad batch.
Set expectations with any client ordering uniforms or matching sets by mentioning tolerance up front, especially on a large run where dozens of individual pieces get compared against each other rather than against a single reference sample.
The mistake is assuming every garment in a case should measure identically to the decimal. Measurement tolerance exists precisely because that expectation is unrealistic at scale, and holding a supplier to zero-variance sizing is a standard no mill actually promises.
