Heat-Resistant Tape

Heat-resistant tape is a high-temperature adhesive tape that holds transfers, vinyl, or garment layers in fixed position through a heat press cycle.

Heat-resistant tape is a thin, high-temp adhesive tape — usually a green or clear polyester film rated to withstand 400-500°F without melting, bubbling, or leaving residue — used to pin a transfer or vinyl piece to a garment before it goes under the heat press. Unlike masking or packing tape, it survives full press dwell time and peels away clean afterward instead of fusing to the platen or the fabric.

Anywhere a design comes apart into multiple pieces — jersey numbers with a separate outline layer, a two-piece HTV logo, a rhinestone template being test-fit before its final press — heat-resistant tape is what keeps those pieces from sliding out of registration between the first tack press and the final full press. We tape every multi-layer number set before pressing; even a millimeter of drift on a football jersey number is obvious from the stands.

Pros use it sparingly and strategically — a few small strips at the corners or gaps of a design, never covering ink or vinyl that needs full platen contact, since the tape itself blocks heat wherever it sits. It gets pulled the moment the piece is aligned and tacked, well before the final full-pressure cure cycle, so it never ends up sandwiched under the finished print.

New shops often reach for regular masking tape or duct tape in a pinch, which is a mistake — standard tape adhesive breaks down well before typical heat transfer application temperatures and can leave a gummy residue baked into the fabric or the platen that's far more work to remove than the alignment problem it was meant to solve.
