Full Bleed

Full bleed is artwork extended past a garment's trim, seam, or cut line so ink or dye reaches every edge with no unprinted margin visible.

Full bleed means the artwork file extends past the actual cut or seam line of a garment panel, not just to its edge, so that when the panel is trimmed and sewn there's no sliver of bare fabric showing. On an all-over-print sublimation job that margin usually runs a quarter inch beyond the pattern piece; on a cut-and-sew garment where fabric is printed flat before the panels are cut, the bleed has to clear the seam allowance too, often 1/2 to 5/8 inch, not just the cutting line.

For anyone ordering an all-over-print hoodie or a pair of leggings, full bleed is what keeps a wraparound design from breaking at the side seam or the sleeve cuff with an obvious white gap. We've caught art files sent in edge-to-edge with zero bleed and had to bounce them back, because printing exactly to the cut line guarantees a slim white edge the moment the panel shifts even a millimeter in cutting or sewing.

Pros build bleed into the template before dropping in artwork, extending background colors, patterns, or textures past every panel edge and letting logos or text sit safely inside a smaller safe area near the middle. Sublimation and DTG handle this differently: sublimation transfers dye through printed paper before the fabric gets cut, so drift in cutting is forgiving as long as the printed area is generous, while DTG prints on an already-cut panel with almost no room for error.

Buyers who've only dealt with poster or business card printing sometimes think full bleed just means printing to the edge of a flat sheet, but a t-shirt panel isn't flat until it's cut and sewn, so the bleed margin has to survive both the cutting tolerance and the seam allowance, not just a piece of paper's edge.
