Fabric weight
Fabric weight is the umbrella spec, expressed in GSM or ounces per square yard, that governs how a garment drapes, feels, and holds up to printing.
Fabric weight is the density of a material per unit of area, and it’s the single spec that shows up on every sheet under one of two units — grams per square meter (GSM) or ounces per square yard (oz/yd²) — both measuring the same physical property in different systems. Lab testing (ASTM D3776 in the US) cuts a standardized swatch and weighs it; that’s the entire method behind every weight figure a supplier publishes.
Weight is the biggest quality signal on a blank’s page before a customer ever touches the fabric — it predicts opacity for printing, how much a shirt will cling versus drape, how warm it wears, and how it survives repeated washing. Two shirts from the same brand at 4.3 oz and 6.1 oz are functionally different products even if both are labeled “100% cotton crew neck”; one’s a summer giveaway tee, the other’s a boxy streetwear cut.
Match weight to the job: lighter fabric for large-run promotional tees where cost and breathability matter most, heavier fabric for premium retail-style drops and any oversized or boxy fit that needs structure to hold its shape off the body. Always read weight alongside fiber content and knit type — a 6 oz open-end cotton tee and a 6 oz ringspun combed tee weigh the same but feel nothing alike.
Buyers frequently assume heavier automatically means better quality, but fabric weight only measures density, not fiber fineness or spinning method — a heavy, coarse open-end tee can feel rougher than a lighter, combed ringspun one. Weight is a starting filter for a blank, never the final word on its quality.
