Acid Wash

Acid wash is a finishing process where pumice stones soaked in chlorine bleach tumble against garments, creating the high-contrast mottled fade of '80s denim.

Acid wash tumbles garments with pumice stones that have been pre-soaked in a chlorine bleach or potassium permanganate solution, so the stones make direct, random contact with the fabric and strip color unevenly wherever they land. Unlike a standard stone wash, there's little or no water in the drum during the active cycle — the stones themselves carry the bleaching agent, which is what produces the blotchy, high-contrast frosting instead of an even fade.

The look is inseparable from '80s denim, and it's exactly what customers are picturing when they ask for a retro band tee or a throwback merch drop — that stark mottling doesn't happen with any gentler wash. We keep a swatch card of stone-to-fabric ratios on file because a heavier stone load produces sharper, more localized fading, while a lighter load spreads the effect more evenly across the shirt.

Reserve acid wash for heavier cotton, 6 oz and up, since the stones can chew through lighter jersey and leave holes at stress points like seams and hems. Always run acid wash before any decoration goes on; printing or embroidering first and washing after will crack ink and fray stitching wherever the stones make contact.

Customers frequently ask for acid wash when what they actually want is a softer, evenly worn look — that's a stone or mineral wash, not acid wash, which is deliberately blotchy and high-contrast by design.
